
Michael was born on August 23, 1946, to John and Jean Helton in Houston, Texas. He was a graduate of Milby High School and Sam Houston State University.
Michael was a proud United States Navy veteran who carried the values of discipline, loyalty, and commitment throughout his life. Above all else, he was a family man. He was the loving husband of Cecilia for 55 years and the devoted father of five beautiful daughters. Michael was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to many grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. He also had a special place in his heart for his beloved dog, Cammie Anne, who brought him comfort and companionship.
Michael was deeply involved in his daughters’ lives and believed strongly in showing up for family. For more than 30 years, he volunteered as a softball coach with the Bay Area Youth Softball League, shaping not only athletes but young lives. His dedication, patience, and encouragement left a lasting impact on countless players and families in the community.
Michael will be remembered for his steady presence, generous spirit, and unwavering love for his family and sports, especially the Houston Astros. His guidance, laughter, and strength will be deeply missed but forever cherished by those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Burke Helton and Jean Helton; his brother, Patrick Helton; and his great-grandson, John White Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; his brother, Terry Helton and his wife, Nita; his daughters, Gliceria White and her husband, JD; Josephine Latoja Benitez; Ligaya Latoja Benitez and her husband, Rafael; Laura Helton Edmonson and her husband, Steve; and Traci Anne Helton; his grandchildren, Natasha Stephanie Miranda and her husband, Jepprey; James White and his wife, Katie-Jean; Joanna Redmond Cuellar and her husband, Nick C.; John White; Jacob Strand; Jonathan Helton Dajao; and Jason Leoncio; and his great-grandchildren, Rafael, Tristan, Nick N., Edrena, Jepprey Jr., Emma, Jasabella, Christian, Jade, Ashton, and Dalton.
Services will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale St., Houston, TX 77023.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Wednesday, February 11, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will take place on Thursday, February 12, at 11:00 a.m., immediately followed by burial at 12:00 p.m.
Military honors will be rendered by the United States Navy in recognition of Michael’s faithful service to his country.
A reception will follow at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All are warmly invited to join the family as they gather to honor and remember a life well lived.
