

Lawrence McCown was born January 1, 1942 in Andrews, South Carolina to Leroy and Juanita McCown. He was the youngest of five siblings. While living in South Carolina, he was a member of the Mount Zion AME Methodist Church. After relocating to Houston, Texas in 1978, he was baptized at Greenspoint Baptist Church. At an early age his family moved to Jamaica Queens, New York. After graduating from John Adams High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After his military service he attended college in Bangor, Maine at the University of Maine. His first professional job was with Exxon Oil Company, which eventually transferred him to Houston. He worked over 35 years for Exxon in a variety of positions in which he really enjoyed. While living in New York, he had a son named Terry Blocker, who was raised by his grandparents. After being relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he met the love of his life, Carole Crowder. On September 5, 1970, Larry married Carole Crowder and to that union a beautiful daughter, Tara Laurette was born. Larry was a former member of the Culinary Arts Ministry at First Metropolitan Church. Until the decline of his health, he was a faithful member who really enjoyed Pastor Ogletree’s sermons and the music ministry. While living in Houston, he was an active participant in a number of organizations, including: The North Houston Frontiers (charter member), Exxon-Mobile Retirees Club, E.B.O.N.Y. Club, and the Dads of Jack & Jill of America, Incorporated. Larry was very talented and had several hobbies that he was very passionate about. These included cooking, fishing, hunting, and golf. However, the hobby he loved best was traveling. He was fortunate to travel with his wife, family, and friends to six of the seven continents---Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa, and Australia. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Leroy McCown; mother, Juanita Jenkins McCown; brother, John Tracy McCown; and sister, Vermont Wiggins. Larry leaves to cherish his memory, wife of 45 years, Carole; daughter, Tara; son, Terry, granddaughter, Tatym Alexa; sisters, Claudelle Green and Cotell Hopkins; the Jenkins family, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
