You left us from this world one year ago today. Although we missed you we are consoled by the fact that you have gone to a better life. We appreciate what you have done for us all those years we have been together. Being the oldest of the siblings, you contributed most of your time and effort in helping our parents taking care of us. We took it for granted then. We realize now we may not have taken care of you as much as you have done for us. For that, we will always feel bad about it.
We wish you all the happiness, good health in your next existence till you attained Nirvana.

You left us a month ago on January 5, 2018. It had been a terrible ordeal for you to go through such horrible experience of sickness and finally death. We all tried very hard to be with you to the end. Yet somehow we feel we could have done more to make you feel comforted during your long illness, For that we shall always feel the pain and sadness in our hearts every time we think of you.

You will always be remembered by your brothers and sisters.
We all share with you whatever good deeds we do in our daily lives.
May you find Peace, Love and Happiness in your next and following lives and even Nirvana.

Ma Ma Gyi,

Being the oldest in our siblings you assumed more responsibility than the rest of us. You took care of mom when she was sick and had to drop out of school, thereby graduated from High School later than I did. Because of your strong will and determination, you not only obtained double degree, but also passed the Bachelor of Education with distinction in Teaching of  Mathematics. The whole family was very proud of you. 

When we were in Burma, all five girls lived with our parents and when we came to the United States, we live together with mom. So you can say that we had been very close to each other. It is very hard to lose someone when you had been together for more than 77 years. When Moe passed away in 2011, our lives had changed since then. We each of us grieved the loss in our own way. 

In 2013, you had a stroke and suffered brain hemorrhage. Ever since then you had not recovered fully from the illness. As always, you tried to enjoy life as much as you can. We did not realize you felt lonely and depressed   because we thought it was part of the process of growing older.

On November 10, 2018, just four days before your 82nd Birthday, you were  hospitalized because of the fall. For the last two months you were transferred from Hospital to Acute Care Facility, then to another Hospital for minor surgery and from there to yet another Acute Care Facility. We felt very sad to see you suffer as more problems developed. We could not bear to see you suffer like that. Yet you were so brave. By looking in your eyes, I could sense your determination to pull together. I told Pae we will bring you back home whatever it takes.

On January 5, 2018 at 8:15 pm, the doctor came and told us your heart stopped during the procedure.  We were all stunned and in disbelief. We lost you forever.

I only hope you realized we all tried very hard to help you get better and bring you back home. That was what you wanted. 

I pray you will find everlasting Peace and Happiness in your next and the following lives and see Mom, Dad and Moe.

May you attain Nirvana

Ma Aye

   My aunt, Daw Myint Myint Aye passed away January 5th at 8:15 pm. She was hospitalized after a fall early November and had since spent the past holiday season and begrudgingly, her 82nd birthday there. She was very spirited and feisty, through the whole ordeal, and up until the very end, she fought with great determination to go home. Her condition seemed to be improving these past few weeks, but she unexpectedly lost her battle, during a seemingly minor procedure.
   
   Being the eldest in her family and having never married, she was a lifelong caregiver and educator, and took great pride in raising her younger siblings, becoming a respected teacher in Burma, and working as a daycare provider to a multitude of energetic American toddlers after she immigrated to the United States. She had immense love for everyone in her family and all those who were lucky enough to be in her charge.

   Her final years were difficult, but she lived most of her life guided by a spirited, feisty heart. She loved watching sports, especially football and basketball, always getting deep into games, shouting and cursing at the opposition, while praying for her teams. She was very religious, chanting mantras and offering alms to Buddha daily, for the welfare of her family and loved ones. She loved going out to eat, taking road trips with her sisters, and watching soap operas, movies and game shows. She also loved playing card and board games and reminiscing about her birthplace of Burma. She had an amazing memory and was a wonderful story teller, weaving fantastic tales and images from her youth, in pitch-perfect  English.

   She is survived by her younger brothers and sisters and her beloved nieces and nephews.

Dear Ma Than,

We are very sad that you suffered much and long before the day you left us forever. I hope you departed realizing that everyone around you tried their best to alleviate your sufferings. I am very sorry I was not able to take care of you full time during your sickness. I pray that you always find peace, the best health and happiness in your next as well as the following lives.

We realize and are grateful for your love and care for all your brothers and sisters sacrificing full enjoyment of your youth. You spent your teen-age years caring for Mom in her sickness, and looking after us and household matters. Although you missed out on devoting time to education resulting in entering College at a later age than most of your siblings, I appreciate the opportunity to share with you, our first year of College together. And I am proud to see you graduating from University with double degrees in Education, and became one of the most qualified, competent and loved High School teachers. I also was very fortunate and proud of your declaration of being your favorite brother. I will always miss seeing you on my visits to Houston, and talking to you on the phone most Sundays.

You always kept telling us , even during your sickness, about your good memories of Dad, Mom and Moe, which we all share. You also set a good example in your dedication to being a devout Buddhist by your sincere religious practices and generous donations, and sharing merits with the departed as well as living family members.

I will miss you very much, and will always pray for you to achieve Nirvana within the shortest possible time.
