Nelda Sue Salter of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 103. Sue was born on June 17, 1921, in Garber, Oklahoma where she spent the first two decades of her life. She was a graduate of Garber High School and worked as a fashion model for department stores in the Enid and Tulsa areas. Sue moved to Houston in 1949 and raised her family there. Sue was honored in 2024 by the City of Houston when she turned 102 and was one of the few centenarians at her nursing facility.
Sue worked most of her adult life as an Accounts Payable/Receivable clerk and a secretary.
She spent her spare time gardening and was well known for being able to grow beautiful roses from a twig that she snipped off of a particular bloom that caught her eye. She had a perpetual green thumb and could grow all sorts of plants that others could not. Sue had a great and some would say “wicked” sense of humor and loved to rib and joke with her grown sons whenever possible. Her sons were especially fond of her “apple pan dowdy” and homemade frozen icebox pies. In her younger years, Sue was a talented seamstress and designed many of her own ensembles. She and her late husband Don enjoyed traveling to tropical destinations such as Hawaii and the Bahamas and always had fun stories to tell about their adventures. Sue adored cats, and had several as beloved pets during her lifetime, including Scrappy, a grey tabby, and a huge Siamese named Fuji.
She is preceded in death by her parents Harry Allen Helton, Jr. and Mary Esther Belew Helton, husband Donald M. Salter, former husband Carl Eugene Sizemore, and son Carl Michael Sizemore.
She is survived by her son Jeffery Lynn Sizemore and daughter-in-law Carla Moore Sizemore.
The family would like to thank Tomeka Kent, Brenda Childress, Bertha Riles, Tammy Burnett, Paula Taylor, and Norissa Jackson of Kentland Ranch, as well as Laura Ammon, Toni Sanchez, and Lavonda Gray of AccentCare for the loving care, skill, and compassion that they showed Sue in her final years.
Family and friends are invited to attend Sue’s visitation and graveside service on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale St., Houston Texas 77023. Visitation begins at noon and interment will commence at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Sue and the family would be honored with a donation in her name to the Houston SPCA.
