Patricia was born in Detroit on July 29, 1940 to Dr. Frederick and Jane Henny. Pat spent her youth in the small town of Birmingham, MI with her younger sister Susan (Dave McGraw) and cousin Anne (Gene Thompson) right across the street. It was a wonderful childhood with lots of extended family close by. Pat graduated from Birmingham High School (Seaholm) and attended the University of Michigan, where she graduated with a BA in English. Pat taught school in the Grosse Pointe school district until she had her first child, Laurel ‘Lauri’ Jane (Michael Prescott). Three years later her second child, David Robert Cook (Courtney) was born. Pat raised her children in Birmingham, where she was a devoted stay at-home-parent, spending her time volunteering in educational and civic organizations. Pat took on many leadership and fund raising roles within the Junior League of Birmingham and other non-profit organizations.
After Lauri graduated high school, Pat made the decision to relocate to Houston (Kingwood) and start a new chapter in Texas with David. Pat became very involved with the local community and also the Junior League of Houston. Once David graduated high school, Pat began a journey of moving around this beautiful country that she loved so much. Her passion was meeting new friends and learning all about the culture and history of each new place she inhabited. Pat lived in San Antonio, Houston again (West U.), Fort Lauderdale, Alexandria VA, Providence RI and Oakland NJ. In each location Pat became involved with the local Junior League along with volunteering at various historical sights and museums. Pat loved history and studied to become a tour guide in Washington DC and volunteered as a museum docent in the other cities where she settled. Pat’s other devotion, besides her family, was animals. Pat always had a dog by her side, and most often a pure white Akita. She cherished all wildlife, but dogs in particular brought her so much joy and companionship.
Upon retirement, Pat returned to Houston because she adored the bustling city and desired to be close to her son David, his wife Courtney and their sons, Alexander, Jonathan (Megan) and Jackson. She chose to build a home in The Heights and grew to love her neighbors and this special neighborhood. When Pat wasn’t volunteering with the Junior League or working as a docent at the Bayou Bend Museum she was traveling around the country visiting the wonderful friends she made in each of the locations where she lived. However, most of Pat’s trips were to visit her daughter Lauri, her husband Mike and their children Morgan (Jonathan Price) and Ryan in Cincinnati. The joy she received spoiling her five grandchildren was unparalleled. Pat also chose to be a special aunt to her sister, Sue’s, daughters Margaret ‘Meg’ McGraw Scherer (Scott) and Kristina ‘Kiki’ McGraw Lyons (Michael) and to her cousin, Anne’s, daughters Virginia ‘Gingie’ Thompson Gauger (Paul) and Marcie Thompson Eberly (Edward).
Pat’s children are inviting extended family and friends to rejoicing in her amazing life and legacy by attending a Celebration of Life gathering at the Junior League of Houston, 1811 Briar Oaks Lane at 3pm on Thursday, June 16, 2022. There will be an opportunity for fellowship and loved ones and friends to share a brief memory or words of remembrance.
There will also be a gathering in Birmingham, on September 8, 2022 to celebrate Pat’s life. Details will be provided to Michigan friends and family soon
