Roy was born on September 8, 1934, to Carman and Effie Watson in LaGrange, Georgia. When he was six weeks of age, they moved to middle Tennessee where Roy spent his youth and adolescence primarily in Buffalo Gap near Caney Creek and then at the family farm at Moss, of which he had particularly fond memories. The family moved from the country to Houston, Texas in 1947. Roy attended Burbank Jr. High and Jeff Davis Sr. High School. He worked for Camelia Ice Cream for 8 years, and then for Borden Ice Cream Company as the Refrigeration Service Manager for 35 years.
Roy married his beloved wife, Glenda Mae (Graves) Watson on December 24, 1954. Their last anniversary marked seventy faithful years of marriage. Four children were born to their union, Terri Lynn, Steven Noel, Roy Jr., and Daniel Craig Watson. Values they instilled and the legacy they leaves include hard work, perseverance, and Christian morals of faith and service. They raised their family in the Aldine area and resided in their home for 53 years until this year.
It is impossible to talk about Roy without acknowledging his devotion to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Roy was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, baptized into Christ at an early age. He served his home church, Hidden Valley Church of Christ, as a deacon and in various outreach ministries, including the prison ministry at Core Civic Association where he preached at least once monthly for 17 years, he personally baptized 273 inmates there who answered the call of Jesus. Roy loved leading and participating in congregational singing for his home church and area-wide events. He also served in the food distribution and Bible study outreach program offered on Wednesdays up until his health declined. He remained evangelistic until his last days, wanting all to have knowledge of Jesus Christ and the salvation he offers.
Roy was active in his local civic associations serving as the President of the Freeway Forest Civic Club in the late 60’s continuing as an active civic club member into the 70’s. His hobbies included golfing at Houston area golf courses, making and maintaining his own putting green, gardening, Ham radio, listening to the Colt 45’s, and he was an avid Texans and Astros fan.
Known for his sense of humor, quick wit, mischievous smile, and ear to ear grin, he was a friend to many.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Carman and Effie (Chaffin) Watson, his four brothers Clarence, Cordell, Carlin, and Leland and their wives.
Survivors include his beloved wife Glenda Watson, his daughter Terri Reed and son-in-law Tim, son Steve Watson and daughter-in-law Gaileen, son Roy Watson Jr. and daughter-in-law Stephanie, and son Daniel Watson and daughter-in-law Renee’.
