

Deacon Ruben Austin Powell, Sr., known for his joyful call of “Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise Him,” entered eternal rest on September 2, 2025, at HCA Houston Northwest Medical Center. He was 85 years old.
Ruben was born on September 13, 1939, in Bryan, Texas, to the late Melvin Sr. and Travis Powell. Eleven children were born to this union.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of God. His life was rooted in faith, service, and love for his family. Ruben worked for many years at Armco Steel as an Inspector and Supervisor, later serving as a Transporter for CJ Stommell & Associates. Outside of work, he was a lifelong sports fan, having played football and ran track in high school, and later enjoying countless professional football and basketball games. Above all, he was a servant-hearted man who made everyone feel welcome. Whether spending time with his grandchildren, cheering on his favorite teams, or giving the shirt off his back, Ruben’s generosity touched all who knew him.
His faithful journey was central to his life. He was a devoted member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church under Pastor Lewis and later served faithfully at Last Praise Deliverance Holiness Church under Presiding Bishop John Cherry.
Ruben’s life was a testimony of love, service, and unwavering faith. His legacy will live on through the family he adored and the countless lives he inspired.
He was preceded in death by; his father and mother, Melvin Sr. and Travis Powell; nine siblings; his beloved wife, Sarah Louise McGlothin Powell; and daughter, Staci Ixchelle Powell. He leaves to cherish his memory; his son, Ruben Austin Powell, Jr. (Lorrie Lynn Powell); daughters, Lady Pamela Yvette Washington (Dr. Bishop Curtis Washington), Monica Latrice Spencer (Duane Spencer) and Jackie Cox; brother, Freddie Lee Power; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who loved him dearly.
