It is with profound sadness that the family of Ruby Alice Nowlin announce her peaceful passing on October 10, 2023 at the age of 91. Ruby Alice Fox was born on December 23, 1931 in Georgetown, Texas to Ruby Mae Bowen and William Melburn Fox.
Ruby will be lovingly remembered by her brother Jimmy, his wife Veronica; son Alan Wesley, his wife Patricia and their children – Chris, David, and Michael; daughter Martha Ann, her husband Barry and their children – Barry Jr. and Sarah; and granddaughter Patricia.
Ruby is preceded in death by her husband Alan; parents, William and Ruby; siblings, Ruth Evelyn, Martha Sue, Joe Ann, William; daughter Alice Kay and granddaughter Mary Ann.
Ruby married Alan Wesley Nowlin in Austin Texas on January 19, 1952 where they lived and had their three children. In 1973 the family relocated to Houston. Ruby was an exceptional seamstress and once owned an upholstery shop. She loved to garden and was particularly fond of her azaleas that surrounded her home of 45 years. So many people in her neighborhood loved her and stopped to visit while she worked barefoot in her flower beds. She always had a perfectly shelled stockpile of pecans from her trees as well. She loved to cook with her grandchildren while passing on her recipes that included anything from Chicken and Dumplings to Orange Bundt Cakes.
Ruby retired after many years of service in the Stovall Junior High cafeteria. She always took time to send the perfect card for each occasion with a sweet note in the most beautiful penmanship. She was a social butterfly at heart and joined the “Red Hat Society” and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Ruby was an active member at the Airline United Methodist Church and later became a member of the Aldine United Methodist Church where they have named the community center in her honor. In her later years she moved to a community for active seniors in 2018 and never looked back. Her friends at Arella kept her very busy with dancing, bingo, casino nights, and get-togethers for every occasion. Ruby was also the very proud great-grandmother, or “Gigi” to 8 great grandkids.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, October 19 at 12:30 p.m. at the Hornsby Cemetery in Austin Texas. A celebration of life will begin at 1:00 p.m. graveside. For those wishing to make a memorial contribution, please give to the Hornsby Cemetery Association.
