Ruth was born on October 21, 1916 in Hallettsville, Texas to parents Lydia Z. and Weaver C. Harvey. The family moved to Houston, Texas a year later. She attended Calvary Baptist Church and accepted Jesus as her Savior and was baptized when she was 12 years old. Ruth married her late husband, Alfred in 1950 in Houston. Her children, James and Lynette, were born in 1953 and 1954 respectively. Ruth and Alfred joined West University Baptist Church in 1955 where she attended for 46 years. She made sure that her children were in church and raised in the admonition of the Lord. In 2001 she moved in with her son
James and his wife Joyce and joined Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Throughout her life she was the perfect example of what a Godly woman should be with the heart of a servant.
In the 1940’s Ruth began her working career as a bank teller. She worked at several different banks throughout her life and took time away from work while raising her kids. She returned to work when the children were in high school and retired in 1981.
Ruth enjoyed music and even played the snare drum in her high school pipe and drum corps. She also played the piano for her Sunday School class. She enjoyed crafts and collecting things. She amassed a very large collection of sea shells. Ruth would go to Galveston and take her mother and the kids and walk the beach picking up sea shells for her collection. After scouring the beach she would peruse the gift shops along the sea wall to find the hard to find specimens.
Ruth was a blessing to all she came in contact with. Her compassion for people was evident where ever she went and with whoever she met. Her 99 years on this earth was spent living for Christ and she is now with him in heaven.
