Sherley (Witt) Skeen, age 88, went peacefully to her heavenly home on November 27, 2023 surrounded by her family and friends. She was born on October 4, 1935 in Abilene, Texas to Garland D. and Delma (Dee) Witt. She grew up with her adopted brother Phil and was a loving and devoted wife to her husband Floyd for the duration of their marriage of 70 years.
She met and married her childhood sweetheart, Floyd Theodore Skeen, at Manchester Baptist Church in Houston on June 12, 1953, and together they raised three children living in Manchester, Austin, Rogers, and Baton Rouge over the span of their marriage with the last twenty plus years in Houston. After graduating from Mary Hardin Baylor University in 1980, Sherley enjoyed teaching for many years, sharing her love of learning with each student in her class. In later years she served as a principal for Clay Road Baptist School, librarian in Central Texas, active member of WMU, taught Sunday School and leader of GAs and youth mission groups passing on her passion to serve others. She worked at Christian organizations in Houston area including CBMC and Union Baptist Association.
She embodied the life of love and sacrifice to her family and to all her circles. Sherley cherished every minute shared with her family as it grew over the years. She counted each family member as a unique and special blessing and relationship sharing time with her daughter-in-laws, Pattie and Cami and her son-in-law Wesley over the span of her lifetime. Sherley was the best MerMer to Rick and Pattie’s two children, Julie and her husband Dave and Michael and his wife Katie, Deela and Wes’ daughter, Shailey and her husband John and to Steven and Cami’s two boys, Graham and Evan as well as her ten great-grandchildren. Throughout her life she embodied a strong simple faith. She had the gift of discernment and was relentless in her efforts to provide encouragement to others. She brought up her children to value sharing time with residents of nursing homes and supported ministries for children in third world countries. She loved taking part in sending care packages to military and wrote countless cards and letters to encourage friends and anyone else on her radar. Her other passion in life was prayer. She was a powerful prayer warrior and considered prayer as talking to her best friend.
Sherley is survived by her beloved husband of 70 years, Floyd, her three children Rick and Pattie Skeen, Deela Roe, Steven and Cami Skeen, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her home going celebration will be held at Forest Park Lawndale. Visitation will be held at 1:30 with service following at 2:30 on Saturday, December 9, 2023 Forest Park, 6900 Lawndale in Houston, Texas. There will be a graveside burial to follow.
