Sophia Mae Davis White was born on May 3, 1922 in Palestine, Texas. She was the older of two daughters born to Jewel Lee Wallace and Walter Davis. She and her mother moved to Houston, Texas in 1926 where she attended Twenty-Third Avenue Elementary School, Harper Junior High School and Booker T. Washington High School (Class of 1940). She also attended the Houston College for Negroes (Texas Southern University). Accepting Christ at age seven, Sophia was baptized at Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. As a Seasoned Saint and Prayer Warrior, she attended services until her health failed; but steadfastly loved and supported her church until her death. Sophia married George White, on January 8, 1942. Their marriage was blessed with nine children. Sophia never worked outside of the home (how could she!) and lovingly referred to herself as, "Chief Cook and Bottle Washer." Sophia was an avid gardener, loved to sew and loved to collect family photos. She attended the many, many school functions of her children and grandchildren, volunteered on numerous PTAs and served as room mother several times. Sophia enjoyed serving as an election poll volunteer. For forty-eight years she served as secretary of Victory Chapter #164, Order of the Eastern Star. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Sr.; mother, Jewel Wallace Dillingham; son, George White Jr.; sister, Ida Bell (who died in infancy); cousin-in-law, Geraldine Johnson and special friends, Sis.
