Stephine went home to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 92 years 6 months and 15 days after losing her long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia. Stephine Eleanor Janik was born on Dec. 19, 1923 to Peter Janik and Marie Hornicek/Janik. She was the youngest of 7. She had 5 sisters and 1 brother. Stephine was baptized on March 23, 1924 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Sugarland, Tx. Her early years were spent on the family farm in the Dayton, Tx. area. Stephine met and later married Carl Schulte on Oct 8, 1945 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in East Gate, Tx.
From this union came two children, a son Norman D. Schulte and a daughter Diane F. Schulte/Weikel. Besides being a wife and mother, Stephine was the main financial contributor for her family. She held many different jobs to supplement her family’s income. She was employed by the City of Houston at the Houston Police Dept. as an offset press operator where she worked for 21 years 7 months and 7 days before retirement. That didn’t last very long, before she was re-hired at a print shop near her home as a printer. Stephine has suffered her share of tragedies, on August 13, 1969 her son Norman was killed in action while serving in the United States Army. Then on May 8 1981, tragedy struck again. Carl, her husband, suffered a fatal heart attack while dancing.
She then met and later married Alvin J. Lenart at All Saints Catholic Church in Houston Tx. on Oct. 20, 1984. Alvin passed away May, 2003.
Stephine loved to travel, fish, play dominoes and play bingo. One of her favorite pastimes was to dance the two-step polka to her favorite band The Vrazel’s Polka Band. Even at the age of 86 Stephine could still two-step polka with the best of them. She liked to visit the casino, a place that she always said “I didn’t lose much, I just broke even.” She loved Mexican food and hamburgers. She loved flowers and was often seen working in the yard tending to her flowers. She loved to bake and she made some of the best kolaches. She had a gift for being creative. She could make roses out of spoons, a fan out of forks, decorate the most beautiful sugar eggs for Easter and bake a gingerbread house for the holidays. Before she went into assisted living care, we were cleaning out her freezer and found 225 pounds of shelled pecans. Yes, that’s right, no kidding 225 pounds! For years, she would tell us she ran out of pecans or the squirrels and neighbors picked them all. Our family will cherish her hard work for years to come making sweets and whatever else we can think of with her pecans.
One of Diane’s fondest memories is helping her mother make Jelly out of the berries they picked. This one particular time they picked 3 large ice chests full of them. Stephine would remind Diane as she picked not to eat too many berries and watch out for snakes. She had a huge fig tree in her back yard that she was very proud of. What do you think she made with those figs? You guessed it more preserves. One thing for sure, we did not run out of some type of jelly or preserves up to the last five years of her life. She is preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her son, all her siblings and her twin great -grandsons, Ashton and Brandon Weikel. Left to cherish her memories are her daughter Diane and her husband Larry Weikel. FAMILY REMEMBERANCE
Meredith McMahon-loved watching the three great grandkids running in and out of the house and climbing around. She would joke with me wished, she could move like that. She loved calling bingo to the old guys when she was older than most of them. She had the greenest thumb when it came to her flower garden. She was so proud to show off her flowers. Laura Palmer and Duane, Brent and Trent Weikel-remembers her coffee cake she made out of bread dough. Also, stated she would giggle when she made kolaches out of bread dough and all thought it was the real kolache dough. Did she really fool them, although it gave her great pleasure? Grandma was a speedy driver; she would hit the accelerator hard to get where she was going as soon as possible. Shelley Weikel would holler out grandma stop sign thinking she would not stop. Diane Schulte/Weikel- mom taught me everything regarding gardening, cooking and how to pick out a great husband and boy did I. Mom and dad would always say to me after a date with Larry “Does he tell you he loves you?” I remember mom and dad grounding me for a week when Larry kissed me on the front porch for the neighbors to see. In the past several weeks, she would introduce Larry to me as her daughter. I think; she was trying to hook us up forgetting that we were already married. Mom was a hard worker all her life and arthritis basically put a toll on her. She is a peace now and pain free.
