

Sylvia Ann Miller-Scarbrough, age 81 of Houston, Texas was born February 28, 1944 and transitioned to her Heavenly Home January 19, 2026 and will be remembered as a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and to many as "Momma Sylvia.”
Born the only child to father, V.T. Miller, Petty Officer Second Class (PO-2) and mother, Florence Marie Mosley.
Sylvia attended Phyllis Wheatley High School, and graduated in 1961. She was a proud alumnus of Phyllis Wheatley, often participating in projects and fundraisers. After high school, she attended Texas Southern University.
Sylvia married Billie Ray Scarbrough this fruitful union gave them children, Samalh Scarbrough, Halamas Scarbrough, Jermal Scarbrough, and Danval Scarbrough.
Sylvia was employed and retired from Houston Independent School District as a contract administrator. She had also been a teacher, a court reporter and worked clerical jobs for the Houston Police Department, and Metro.
Sylvia had an entrepreneurial spirit. She sold Tupperware and Mary Kay and also started a hotshot delivery service and a personal shopper service.
Sylvia was a faithful and devoted mother. Whatever activities her children were involved with she always lent her support, whether football, dance recitals, music recitals or being involved in PTO.
Sylvia was a social butterfly and nickname "The Energizer Bunny" by her daughter, Samalh. She was an active member of the social group, "The Red Hat Society," Not only a member, she had become a Queen with members in her Chapter, "The Purple Plumes", and went on to become an ambassador for the society. Sylvia enjoyed line dancing and became a member of the Hulda urban line dancers. She enjoyed gardening, crafting, and shopping.
Sylvia loved God. She was a faithful member serving each church she attended, including Grace Church of Humble and Grace Church of Garden Oaks, Love Temple, Hope City, and Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. During her time at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church she founded a youth group, named Getting in Touch with Our World or GIT WOW. Sylvia also took her young children to church where they were all baptized and or christened. At Love Temple Pastor Dennis Douglas named her a "Mother in Zion." Mother in Zion, is a high compliment in religious contexts, referring to a woman who is a valiant defender of her home, family and faith, it signifies a woman who nurtures children in righteousness, and plays a foundational role in building the kingdom of God. Sylvia had a way of connecting with people, from cab drivers to dialysis technicians, to friends her children would bring to the house to visit, all referred to her as “mama.”
Sylvia was preceded in death by her loving parents V.T. Miller and Florence Marie Mosley.
Sylvia is survived by her children, Samalh Scarbrough, Halamas Scarbrough, Jermal Scarbrough, Danval Scarbrough. In addition, she leaves behind a host of loving, friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on January 31, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Heights Funeral Home, located at 1317 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008.
A memorial service will follow at the same location from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
