Charles Alexander (Chuck) Nolen was born on April 24, 1928 in Scottsboro, Alabama to parents Theodore Roosevelt Nolen and Allie Mae Machen Nolen. Early childhood days were spent in the Mud Creek and Skyline areas near Scottsboro and in teen years the Hazel Green area. Chuck lived a long, happy life of 93 years and passed away on February 27, 2021 with his loving wife Shirley by his side.
Chuck is survived by his wife Shirley; son Scott Alexander Nolen; sons-in-law, Michael Gifford and John Bennett; sister, Julia Tollison (Bob); brother, Bill Nolen (Billie Jean); grandchildren, Whitney Mitchell (David), Elise Gifford, Andrew Gifford, Adam Gifford (Dierdra); eight great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many, many friends and loved ones.
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Nolen; and daughters, Shannon Nolen Gifford and Susie Nolen Bennett.
Chuck met Shirley Glover at the Rohm and Haas Company, where they both worked, and they were married soon after. Together they had three children, Shannon, Susie and Scott. He and Shirley lived in Huntsville, Alabama for the majority of their 64 years of married life and were faithful members of the West Huntsville Church of Christ where Chuck served in leadership roles and taught Bible classes.
As a veteran and true patriot of this country, Chuck was proud to have served in both the United States Army during the Korean War and as a Naval Reservist for 37 years. Chuck worked at MICOM for 25 years and Bankston Motor Homes for 13 years.
Chuck loved all things cowboy! He loved western songs, especially Cattle Call, movies and memorabilia, and even “doodled” cowboy pictures in his spare time. He had a long-standing engagement each Tuesday with Arlen Moore, his life-long friend, brother, and fellow cowboy enthusiast.
Chuck was blessed to have many close friends and loved ones that he cherished and who will love and miss him dearly. The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, care and concern shown during Chuck’s illness and passing. You will never know how much your loving acts of kindness, comfort and support have meant to us. You are all invited to a Celebration of Life service on March 27, 2021 at 10 a.m. at the West Huntsville Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to: West Huntsville Church of Christ – Building Fund (1519 Old Monrovia Road, Huntsville, AL 35806) or Heartlite Hospice – (111 East Laurel Street, Scottsboro, AL 35768)
