

Monroe Ben Mathis “Monte” age 74, died in the Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care Center in Huntsville Alabama on July 31, 2023. He was born in Atlanta, GA where he graduated from Forest Park High School and Clayton State College. Monte enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War period and served from 1970 – 1975 as a Military Intelligence NCO when he met and married his bride of 50 years, Sarah Sigsworth Mathis. He was medically retired and totally disabled from his service in the U.S. Army. Monte served his community as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician and as the Deputy Coroner (unpaid) for Henry County, Georgia.
Monte was a kind-hearted, genuine, caring, loving husband, and father. He was an involved parent throughout his children’s lives and a dedicated grandparent. His warmth and caring nature was very special to the family. Monte’s resilience and grit was a testament to how important his family was to him. He never let his health or disabilities stand in the way of supporting his family regardless of the physical cost. Monte’s steadfast determination and loving nature greatly improved the quality of life of all who knew him. He was looked upon as a great example in service to his country, family, and God throughout his life. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and those who knew him in the communities of Stockbridge, Georgia and Huntsville, Alabama. Monte’s loyalty and compassion will truly be missed.
He was preceded in death by his Mother (Sue Mathis), Father (Glenn Mathis), Brother in-law (Roger Norris), and Sister in-law (Cheri Mathis).
He is survived by his wife Sarah Mathis, Son Adam Mathis (Misty Mathis), Daughter Stephanie Mathis Thomas (Joseph Thomas), Aunts Modelle Mathis, Ruth Finley, and Elizabeth Chester; Grandchildren Jodie Thomas, Hope Thomas Whalley (Ian Whalley), Emerie Thomas, Avery Thomas; Great Grandchildren Gracyn and Noah Whalley, Siblings- Marc (Donna), Emmie (Johnny), Mike (Jean), Vicky, Max (Sarah); In-laws John, Bob (Janet), Clifton (Verna), Bill (Debbie); multiple cousins, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
The public visitation and funeral service will take place at Valhalla Funeral Home Huntsville Alabama on Saturday August 5 at 10:00 am and the service will begin at 11:00 am. An interment service will take place on Friday, October 20, 2023 beginning at 11:00 am, at the Georgia National Cemetery, 2025 Mount Carmel Church Lane, Canton GA 30114.
