Newell L. Varner, of Huntsville, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 in Arab, Alabama at the age of 88.
Mr. Varner was born on May 25, 1927 in Troy, North Carolina to the late James W. Varner and Sallie M. Reynolds Varner.
He was a United States Navy veteran of WWII. Mr. Varner continued to serve his country, working on Redstone Arsenal
for the Department of Defense, where he later retired. In the community, Mr. Varner was a deacon and member
of Hillwood Baptist Church for 56 years and a reserve Deputy Sheriff, of Madison County, for 20 years.
Mr. Varner was preceded in death by Bernadene Ruth Matthey Varner, his beloved wife and sweetheart of 55 years.
Those left to cherish his memory and to continue the legacy include his daughter, Sarah Varner Williams (husband, Larry)
of New Hope, AL; son, Lonnie Joe Varner of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Susan Williams Cox (husband, Roger) of Arab, AL,
Marty Williams (wife, Misty) of New Hope, AL, and Gina Williams Strychar (husband, Greg) of Ann Arbor, MI; and
great-grandchildren, Joshua Ryan Cox and Jaren Riley Cox.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 13, 2016 from 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home, with funeral services on
Sunday, February 14, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the same location. Rev. Charles Freeman and Rev. Roger Cox will be officiating. Entombment,
at Valhalla Memory Gardens will immediately follow, with Military Honors.
