She entered the work force, in Columbia, with the phone company. During an outing with her roommates, she attended a social hosted by Fort Jackson. This is where she met Otha “Buster” Acuff. They met and married in 1952 and moved to Alabama when he left the Army.
They were blessed with their first child in 1953. She continued as a homemaker until 1976 when she began working at Madison Academy. She worked in the cafeteria there until 1982.
After leaving Madison Academy, she began her career at JC Penney as a sales associate. During her 14 years there, she developed many close friendships that remained until her death.
When she retired, she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, going out to eat, going to functions at church, and reading. She also enjoyed painting portraits and landscapes, a hobby she acquired while working for Ann Taylor, a local artist, in the 1990s.
