Ruth was born June 24, 1923 in Albertville to Davis and Birdie Hedricks. While growing up, Ruth loved to read and going to school was one of her favorite memories. She was the class of 1941 Valedictorian at Albertville High School. Immediately after graduation, she was given a scholarship from an unknown benefactor which allowed her to attend Business School.
Upon graduating, the country was in the midst of WWII, and she decided to leave her home in Alabama and travel with a group of friends to Washington DC to work. Just before leaving Alabama, she met the love of her life, Charles Hill, as he was preparing to head to Europe and defend our country’s freedom.
After the war, they both moved back to Alabama and were married August 24,1946. Ruth worked at Olan Mills while Charles attended the University of Alabama. Upon Charles’ graduation, they both went back to work with the Civil Service Department in Washington D.C. until Charles accepted a job at the Redstone Arsenal as an engineer and they settled in Huntsville, Al.
Ruth was a homemaker for a number of years and enjoyed sewing, cooking and entertaining the neighbors in her home.
She also worked with the Huntsville City Schools as a secretary for many years. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members. She delighted in taking care of her granddaughters and her great-grandchildren and will be forever remembered for her love and making sure they always had enough to eat.
Mrs. Hill is survived by her sister, Willene Dickerson; two daughters and their spouses, Janet and Danny Jordan, Nancy and Danny Watts; and 3 grandchildren, their spouses and children, Jessica and Bart Pany, Garrett, Meghan and Faith; Jennifer and Brandon Palmer, Grace, Glory and Luke; Laura and Dave Harper, Lillian, Annabelle, and Evelyn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hill and her brothers Owean, Joe Beryl and Ted Hedricks.
Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:30 Saturday at Valhalla Memory Gardens and Funeral Home with the service at 10:30, with the burial to follow.
In lieu of donations or flowers, the family asks that you call or visit a loved one and let them know how special they are to you.
