

Shirley Ann Witzka was born on September 2, 1936 to Emil and Dora (Carver) Witzka. She married Theodore John Thompson on July 4, 1956. Shirley was an Army wife for 20 years, living in Iowa, Germany, Seneca Army Depot NY, Ft. Sheridan, IL, Okinawa and Nebraska before moving to Huntsville, Alabama where she worked at the commissary for almost 30 years before retiring. Shirley’s heart was her grandchildren and great grandchildren, always going to their various activities and always on the go until she was overcome by the side effects of arthritis.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Thompson; parents, Emil and Dora Witzka; four brothers, Emil Witzka, Vernon Witzka, Donald Witzka and Robert Witzka; sister, Jeanette Witzka; sons-in-law, Merrill Billups, Jr, MSG Robert Barnes, Jr.
She is survived by her five children, Ellen Barnes, Annette Billups, John Thompson, Karen Balazsy and Debra VanHeiden; ten grandchildren, Robbie Barnes, Sonny Billups, Jeff Billups, Mike Billups (Cindy), Cameron Balazsy, Katelynn Balazsy, Jonathan VanHeiden, Laura VanHeiden, David VanHeiden, Chris Thompson (Dakota); nine great grandchildren; four brothers, Jim Witzka, Randy Witzka, Bill Witzka, Kevin Witzka (Susan); three sisters-in-law, Darlene Witzka, Myra Higgins (Doug), Roberta Witzka. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 30, 2021 from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at Valhalla Funeral Home. A Graveside Service will begin at 2:00pm at Valhalla Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Arthritis Foundation.
