Born in Morganton, North Carolina, he was the son of William Jeremiah Crawley and Mary Elizabeth Brittain. He attended Salem High School and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement and Corrections from the University of Nebraska and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Boston University. He also completed the Air Force’s senior professional military education, including Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College.
Steve served in the U.S. Air Force for over 30 years, beginning as an enlisted Security Policeman and later earning a commission as an officer, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His career spanned global assignments in law enforcement, nuclear and air base defense, intelligence support, and combat operations during the Cold War and Vietnam era. He later led security engineering and systems programs supporting major Air Force, Department of Defense, and national space initiatives.
Outside his professional life, he was committed to mentorship and education, helping establish a Criminal Justice department at a local junior college. He also served as President of the Alabama Association of Air Force Officers. He loved fishing and travel, and visited over 30 countries.
Steve was a man of relentless drive and quiet generosity, always the first to step in and solve a problem, especially when it meant easing the burden on someone he loved. He was kind in how he treated others, known for his ability to connect with people, his quick wit, and natural charm. He believed in preparation, self-reliance, and finding a way forward through hard work and clear thinking—values he lived by every day.
At home, he was a devoted husband to his wife, Jan, and a proud father and grandfather who found his greatest joy in time spent with family—whether hosting gatherings, caring for his home, or sitting at the kitchen table in long conversations filled with humor, debate, and lessons about life. He had a love of ideas and a gift for teaching others how to think critically, often challenging those around him while quietly taking pride in their growth. He gave generously, expected effort over entitlement, and led by example in both discipline and care.
Steve’s life was defined by love of family, devotion to country, and a belief in thinking clearly, working hard, and always finding a way forward.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; his daughters, Toni, Tammy, and Pamela; and his grandchildren, Jacob, Jessy, Stephanie, Elizabeth, Thomas, and Samantha. He is also survived by his sisters, Patsy, Joyce, and Lynn. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kay.
Visitation will be held at Valhalla Funeral Home and Memory Gardens on Friday, April 3, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a service and entombment at 3:00 p.m. with military honors. A reception will follow at the funeral home.
