

She was a 1951 graduate of New Castle High School (New Castle, IN) and earned her BA from Miami University (Oxford, OH) in 1955. In 1978 she earned her Master of Arts from Butler University in Indianapolis, IN.
While Barbara was in high school, she was the Sr. Class Secretary, a four-year member of the student council, a member of the National Honor Society, and participated in singing with a girl’s sextet and as an individual. At the age of 15, Barbara wrote an essay My Part in America’s Future, which was read on the floor of U.S. Senate and placed in the U.S. Congressional Record.
While at Miami University, Barbara was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, a member of Miami’s acapella choir, and graduated Cum Laude with a dual major in English and Social Studies. Barbara and her husband John were a true “Miami Merger” and met in an International Politics class.
After graduating she was involved with the American Association of University Women, she was actively involved in the Ohio State Committee for the building of Wright State University, the Dayton Womens’ Club, establishment of the Three Rivers, MI preschool cooperative, and various PTA’s over the years.
Barbara taught at Oakwood Jr. High School in Dayton, OH and Westland Jr. High School in Indianapolis, IN. She was a volunteer for over ten years working with children in teaching them to read and a volunteer SAT tutor in English.
Barbara is survived by her sister Judith Brenner, her daughters’ Deborah (Hart) Ashley (husband James K. Ashley), Rebecca (Hart) Furtado (partner Sara Tarter), six grandchildren (Donald, Laura, Charles, Megan, Ellen, John) and two great-grandchildren (Dillon, Evelyn).
