Betty grew up on a farm in central Michigan and was often found climbing trees, or riding a horse when her chores were done. After graduating from Carson City High School, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana, where she studied Life Sciences and Psychology. She accepted a job with Upjohn Pharmaceuticals (now Pfizer) and lived in Kalamazoo, MI.
Jerry grew up in Goshen, Indiana. He was active in 4H and had various jobs while at Goshen High School including cutting glass at a window factory and delivering groceries. Jerry graduated as valedictorian and went on to Manchester College to study science for his undergraduate degree.
Betty and Jerry met at Manchester College and shared many wonderful times while earning their degrees. Jerry said he ate so much cherry pie in the dining hall that he only rarely ate it later in life. Betty recalled climbing out a window of the residence hall to sit on the roof and talk to Jerry after the women’s 10:00 PM curfew.
Once Jerry graduated from Manchester, he and Betty got married and moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where Jerry attended the Indiana University Medical School. Betty worked in the Dental Lab that developed Crest toothpaste. Later, living in Indianapolis while continuing medical school they lived in an 8 foot x 32 foot trailer across from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where they often found people sleeping under their trailer during race month. They moved to Traverse City, MI for Jerry’s internship and grew to love northern Michigan. They shared memories of snow coming in the windows of their first rental house, and of Jerry walking backwards to the hospital because of the blinding snow. While in Traverse City, their daughter Lori was born. The following year Jerry joined a Family practice group in Lagrange, IN, and they made many friends and learned to water ski in the numerous lakes. After a few years Jerry decided to specialize in anesthesia and moved to Indianapolis. The remainder of Jerry's career was spent in Indianapolis at Winona and at Women’s Hospital .They enjoyed golf and tennis in their free time.
Betty was a Girl Scout leader for several years, and a school room mother, supplying delicious cookies for countless parties.
Jerry, Betty, and Lori loved to travel and summers were spent taking road trips all over the country. Later, they travelled to Mexico and the Caribbean. After retirement, Betty and Jerry ventured to Hong Kong, China, France, Ireland (Betty’s favorite), various countries in South America as well as Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
The best part of their retirement was the birth of grandchildren, Sarah & Matthew, who brought them incredible joy. Summers were then spent at the cottage in Leland, MI swimming, boating & relaxing.
For many years they attended every church sponsored chicken dinner in the county.
Betty and Jerry were preceded in death by infant twins, Mary and Mark. Betty was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie (Sherrick) Clark, and her two brothers/sisters in law, Dean and Jean Sherrick, and Don and Dorine Sherrick. Betty is survived by her sister, Beverly Campbell (husband Larry).
