Devoted husband and father, prodigious consumer of sweets, and braggard of his many offspring; Dave was a sales executive by day, and actor/storyteller/artist and Notre Dame fan by night.
Born to George and Leona Foy on January 26, 1932 in Chicago, IL – Dave was taken by our Lord to continue his work in heaven, on July 13th, 2022. Raised on the North Side of Chicago, he graduated from St. George High School and went on to study at the University of Notre Dame. There he would meet his sweetheart, Gayle Ann Baumer, who captured his heart with stories of her large and boisterous family from New Orleans. This fighting Irishman (ok, more Scottish man) graduated from Notre Dame in 1954. He enlisted and served in the tank division of the Korean War from 1954-56. Soon thereafter, Dave and Gayle married and they proceeded to have an even larger and more boisterous family than her own. They settled in Indianapolis, IN and became loyal members of the St. Luke’s Catholic Church community and devoted members of Christ through service to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and other charities. Loyalty is a common theme surrounding Dave – he was married to Gayle for 64 years. During that time, he worked for 40 years as a Sales Executive at Norton Company, was President of the St. Luke’s Catholic School Board and Parish Council; and most importantly, he was an amazing father to 10 children and 29 grandchildren. He loved to camp, grill, fish, garden and play with his children – he was our cheerleader, wise sage, disciplinarian, storyteller, and comforter all rolled into one. He showed us the value of hard work and of managing our money and time. In addition, he loved to display the humor he inherited from his mother by cracking jokes and farts at will and was a long-standing member of Players (famously playing the role of Snoopy in a production of Peanuts).
Dave is preceded in death by his mother and father and his first-born son, David George. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Gayle, and 10 of their children: Catherine (Joe) Foy-Roussos, Christine (Mike) Purich, Margaret (Dave) Meinhart, Maureen (Ian) Foy-Tornay, Colleen (Todd Gudgel) Foy, Kevin (Jennifer) Foy, Karen (Jeff) Semler, Mary Ann (Robin Wang) Foy, Brian (Joy) Foy, Christopher and their collective 29 children – which are too many to list in this short obit. All will miss his sly grin, cheeky responses to our inquiries, magic tricks, artistic talents, and abiding love.
