Edward L. Trumpey Jr., 85, of Indianapolis, IN, died on Dec. 29, 2024. Ed was born in Indianapolis on Jan. 28, 1939, to Genevieve Rady Trumpey and Edward L. Trumpey Sr. The oldest of thirteen children in the Trumpey house, Ed was a role model and devoted brother and son. He graduated from Scecina High School in 1957 and then attended the Purdue Extension in Indianapolis. Ed was a proud member of the USA Marine Corps Reserves from 1962 to 1966. In 1963, Ed married Judith Vittetau in Indianapolis. They were married for 61 years. In 1966, they welcomed a son, Joseph, and in 1972, they welcomed a daughter, Julie.
A hardworking and dedicated family man, Ed’s first job was as a toy salesman at JC Penny. Next, he sold carpeting at Blocks in Glendale, where he met Judy. After that, he became a certified Health Inspector for the City of Indianapolis, followed by a job as a salesman for Campbell’s Soup and then as the “candyman” salesman for Brach’s Candy. He ended his career by running his own handyman business.
Ed’s Catholic faith was central to his life. A St. Luke’s parishioner for over 50 years, Ed’s faith was cemented when he completed Cursillo weekend. Ed was instrumental in re-establishing and leading Senior CYO in Indianapolis and grew many lifelong friendships there. He was an active Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, Indian Princess leader, and longtime St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteer.
Ed was a master gardener, and his beautiful flowers and yard are a tribute to his green thumb. He also loved woodworking, crafting beautiful pieces. He loved looking for, buying, and owning many tools. He loved being creative with his kids and grandkids, even learning new skills like blacksmithing and ceramics.
Ed was a talker who loved sharing stories of the good old days. He especially loved sharing with the little ones, rocking a baby, teasing a toddler, and coaxing a smile from a shy one. In later years, Ed loved to sit on his patio, greet friends and family, and share stories. Going out for breakfast after church with family was one of his favorite simple pleasures.
Ed was preceded to heaven by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Judy; his son, Joe of Grass Lake, MI, and his wife, Shelly; his daughter, Julie Avellana of Westfield, IN, and her husband, Tony; his six grandchildren: Jacob (Elke) Avellana, Peter Avellana, Jonathan Avellana, Maria (Mitch) Stevens, Autumn Trumpey and Evelyn Trumpey, and his four great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Lillian, and Antony Avellana, and Leona Stevens. Ed is also survived by his twelve siblings: Jerry (Elaine) Trumpey, Beverly Zurface, Jean Joyce Shumaker, Jim (Susie) Trumpey, Mary (Mike) Yates, Dennis (Beth) Trumpey, Larry (Donna) Trumpey, Mark Trumpey, Michele Fox, Michael (Trina) Trumpey, Denise (Bart) McAtee, Angela (Dave) Rhodes and more nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews than we can count. Ed loved his family above all else and wanted everyone to know how much he loved them and how proud he was of them all.
Visitation for Edward will be held Wednesday, January 1, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Leppert Mortuary – Nora, 740 East 86th St, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, January 2, 2025 at 1:00 PM at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive East, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260.
Ed would be happy if you donated to St. Luke Church in his memory.
Joe and Julie request that instead of flowers, you plant a tree, flowers, or a beautiful hanging basket for yourself and think of Dad each time you care for it and enjoy its beauty.
Joe and Julia also request that you visit their mom, Judy, at Maple Park Village when you are in good spirits. Try to get her to eat a meal or enjoy a coffee with you. Please enjoy your time with her; if she asks about Dad, you can tell her honestly that Dad is doing well.
