With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Jack Leslie Mart, an amazingly loving husband, dedicated father, doting grandfather, loyal brother, and supportive friend. Jack passed away on December 17, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and a life well-lived. Jack is survived by his wife Marilyn (Pierce) Mart, son Michael Mart and wife Chris (Phillips) Mart, son Brad Mart and wife Sharon (Skalicky) Mart, daughter Krista (Mart) Vanourny and husband Stephen Vanourny, Jr., grandchildren Andrea Mart, Allison Mart, Jennifer Mart, Jack Vanourny and Emily Vanourny, along with his dear brother Robert Mart. He was preceded in death by his parents Palmer and Pauline Mart and brothers, Palmer Mart, Jr, and Kenneth Mart.
Born in Plymouth, Indiana, on November 18, 1938, he spent his formative years surrounded by the love and camaraderie of his brothers. Their shared interest in fishing led to many great adventures and eventually to exploring the rivers of Michigan fishing for salmon.
Jack's attendance at Plymouth High School was marked by athletic involvement and leadership. As the quarterback of the football team, a varsity tennis player, and senior class president, he showcased not only his athleticism, but also his natural ability to lead and inspire others. He later graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with a business degree, laying the groundwork for a successful career in construction management.
In 1961 Jack met the love of his life, Marilyn, after being set up by good friends on a blind date. It was apparently love at first sight as Marilyn walked down the stairs of the Chi Omega House where they met. They spent the next year having fun going on double dates with friends, going to social events and dances with her sorority and his fraternity, Sigma Nu. They were married on January 21, 1962, embarking on a 61 year journey together where he was devoted to and adored her until his dying breath. For Jack who loved to fish, he described Marilyn as "the greatest catch of his life."
Jack and Marilyn went on to raise their children together with compassion, kindness and unconditional love. His reassuring guidance helped shape their lives, leaving an indelible mark on each of them.
A distinguished Naval Officer in the U.S. Navy for three years, Jack exemplified duty, honor, and service to his country. His leadership and commitment to excellence carried into every aspect of his life.
In his professional life, Jack dedicated himself to designing and building commercial and residential properties. As Vice President in charge of construction at Park Fletcher Commercial Real Estate for over a decade, he played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of the community.
Devoted to his faith, Jack served as an elder and active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. He also contributed to his community as a Cub Master for his sons' Cub Scout Pack at Fall Creek Elementary School, embodying the principles of leadership, mentorship, and community service.
Jack's hobbies reflected his zest for life. A skilled winemaker, he earned the prestigious title of Winemaker of the Year at the Indiana State Fair in 2004, showcasing his talent and passion for creating the perfect blend. He also loved to paint beautiful landscape watercolors that often included either boats, water or barns. His incredibly creative spirit positively influenced anything he touched.
A small private ceremony and burial will be held for family members this week and a larger celebration of Jack's life will take place this summer, with more details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or Northminster Presbyterian Church, reflecting Jack's spirit of generosity and compassion.
As we mourn the loss of Jack Leslie Mart, let us also celebrate the loving, creative and impactful life he led, forever grateful for the memories he shared with all of us. May his legacy be a beacon of inspiration and a reminder of the enduring power of love.
