Jess graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA with a business degree. Soon after, he joined the Army National Guard where he was a cook. When asked about his time in the service, Jess would frequently respond with subtle pride, “I did my duty.” Jess started his professional career in 1963, when he worked as a bond underwriter for Hartford Insurance in Chicago, IL.
While in Chicago, Jess met Nancy on a blind date arranged by her sister, Jackie. Returning home, Nancy informed her mother she was going to marry Jess, though at the time, Jess knew nothing about it. They were married at St. Juliana Parish in Chicago on September 4, 1965. Last fall, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in a special ceremony at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Indianapolis, IN.
After various work transfer stops in Kansas City, MO, Grand Rapids, MI and Indianapolis, IN, Jess became a Surety Vice President at Old Republic in Milwaukee, WI. In 2001, Jess retired. He and Nancy became residents of Laurie, MO, living their dream life on Lake of the Ozarks until moving to Zionsville, IN in 2018.
In the last 8 years of his life, Jess was an active member of Zionsville Lions Club. He greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends and following his favorite sports teams, the Green Bay Packers, Indiana University Basketball, and Butler University Basketball. Jess and Nancy greatly enjoyed experiencing the world together. The two of them continued trips to Florida, South Padre Island, and Oregon through Jess’s 85th birthday.
Whether through celebrations or helping in times of need, Jess always made time for his family. At holiday gatherings, particularly later in life, he made a point to tell his children and grandchildren how proud he was of their accomplishments and character. He’ll also be remembered as a good friend to people in all places that he and Nancy lived. Jess was well-read, had a fantastic memory (the more obscure topic, the better!) and was an engaging conversationalist on just about any topic. He loved dogs, woodworking, early jazz music, sports, a belt of Jack Daniels, a cold beer, and a great bratwurst with sauerkraut.
Jess is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy, and his children Eli, Darin, and Janelle. He’s now reunited with his fourth child, Kori, who passed away in 2024. Jess is proud grandfather to Logan, Patrick, Graydon and Marcus. He is uncle to nieces Jodi (Tom) Pospeschil and Julie (Craig) VerSteegh.
Jess will be missed by so many. He lived a remarkable, full life and is now at peace.
