Kevin James Schafer, 68, of Indianapolis, departed this life Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at his home. Kevin was born in Indianapolis on August 3, 1952 to the late James Joseph and Mary Rita (nee Talboo) Schafer. He grew up and attended St. Lawrence Catholic School and Latin School and earned his Bachelors of Political Science from Indiana State University and IUPUI. Kevin worked as a court clerk for our state and city governments. In December of 2018, Kevin retired from Washington Township Courts. As a very dedicated Democrat, Kevin had also worked with former governors, Bayh and O’Bannon. Kevin was a longtime member of the Marion County Democratic Party and had served as a ward chairman and precinct committeeman for 27 years. He was also a longtime and dedicated member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. When not talking politics or on the campaign trail, Kevin enjoyed reading, rocking out to the Beatles and Bruce Springsteen, studying genealogy and sharing his German heritage with others. He was a kind and gentle soul who loved the simple things in life and learning others stories. Kevin is survived by his Immortal Beloved wife, Diane Schafer; his devoted brothers, Brian Schafer, Leo (Lori) Schafer, Alan (Julie) Schafer and Joseph (Betty) Schafer; his beloved nieces and nephews, his faithful dogs, Scooter, Calli and Duncan and a host of dear friends and grateful colleagues through the years. Kevin was preceded in death by his younger brother, Neil Schafer and beloved nieces, Alison, Guiliana, and Susan Schafer. Visitation for Kevin will be from 4 – 7 pm on Monday, October 12th at Leppert Mortuary – Nora Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 13th at St. Luke Catholic Church followed by inurnment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery. Masks are required and social distancing protocols will be exercised at all public services.
