Martha Elizabeth Fairfield

Martha E. Fairfield died peacefully on April 17, 2024, in her home at Hoosier Village, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 28, 1925, to Helen and Chi Waggoner. She graduated from Duke University in 1948 and moved to Indianapolis where she met Jim Fairfield while both were working at Indianapolis Life Insurance Company. They married in 1950 and Martha spent many years as a homemaker, raising their three daughters. She was an active, engaged and valued member of First Baptist Church of Indianapolis for 70 years, serving in a variety of capacities. She especially valued her role as an adult Sunday School class teacher. She is predeceased by her brother, Edward Waggoner, and her husband, James Fairfield. She is survived by her daughters Catherine Fairfield (Mike Ideran), Nancy Fairfield (Paul Vanderwal) and Susan Fairfield; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Merwald, Elizabeth Merwald, Joanna Martin, Nikki Ellis, Sam Folley, Megan Nolan and Rebecca Folley; fourteen great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Martha Nakamura (Phil) and Amy Brothers (John). Friends and family may gather on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at First Baptist Church 8600 N. College Avenue, Indianapolis, IN at 9:30 a.m. for visitation.
