Phillip George Mosbaugh, M.D. of Indianapolis passed away on October 25, 2023. He was born in Noblesville, Indiana on January 15, 1938, to Frances and Ward Mosbaugh of Arcadia, IN. Growing up in the farmland of Arcadia, Phil fondly recalled the days he spent as a boy helping his grandfather George on his farm. The lessons he learned there about the value of hard work and fortitude would stay with him throughout his lifetime. Phil attended Jackson Central High School, graduating in the class of 1956, and went on to Indiana University and Indiana University School of Medicine, where he graduated in the class of 1963.
As a urologist, Phil was one of the original group of doctors in the Urology of Indiana medical practice, and was a clinical professor at the IU School of Medicine. Phil was an innovator throughout his medical career. He was part of a team at Methodist Hospital that performed Indiana’s first kidney transplant and helped to bring the revolutionary treatment of lithotripsy (a non-invasive procedure to treat kidney stones) to the United States. He was a specialist in interstitial cystitis, and patients from all over the world sought his treatment for this difficult disease.
Phil was a devoted family man, and enjoyed planning wonderful trips with his first wife, Vera, and daughters Annie and Virginia, during their childhood, and later, with his second wife, Beth. He was proud of his two grandchildren and loved hearing about their accomplishments. Phil was a longtime member of Meridian Hills Country Club, where he adored playing golf, though sometimes the game got the better of him; he had the dubious distinction of once hurling a golf club into a tree so high that the pro had to get a utility truck to remove it.
Survivors include his wife, Beth McTurrnan Mosbaugh, daughter Annie Knapp, grandchildren Daven and William Knapp, step-children William McTurnan and Mary Lea McTurnan, and step-grandchild Charles Rawn. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera Deganutti Mosbaugh, daughter Virginia (Lars) Horne, and sister, Patricia Mosbaugh Huffman. Family and friends will gather on Wednesday November 8 at St. Luke Catholic Church, with calling at 10:30 a.m. and a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. A reception will be held following the services at Meridian Hills Country Club. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations are gratefully requested to the Indiana University Foundation IU School of Medicine Class of 1963 Scholarship, P.O. Box 7072, Indianapolis, IN 46202.
