WILLIAM A. SIGMAN, age 91, of Indianapolis, IN passed away May 3, 2020. He was the son of the late Allan E. and Irma (Steuck) Sigman, born on June 21, 1928 in Dubuque, Iowa.
Bill was honored with the 33rd Degree in the Scottish Rite Masonry and was a trustee of the Indianapolis Scottish Rite Cathedral. He was also a 50 year member of the Northwest Lodge Number 770 F&AM, as well as a member in National Sojourners, Inc. and Murat Shriners.
After graduating from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, he joined Johnson Controls in 1950. From 1967 to 1991 he served as their Indiana Branch Manager until his retirement in 1991. In 1991 he became a partner in the Architectural/Engineering firm of BSA Life Structurers, retiring in 2010. He was a member of Scholastic Engineering Honoraries Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma. He served in the US Army and the US Army Reserves as an Artillery Officer from 1950 until his discharge in 1958 and was a life member of the American Legion and Field Artillery Officers Organization.
He was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and was active in numerous civic organizations including The Indianapolis Downtown Kiwanis Club and was their past President and was an emeritus member of the Junto Club of Indianapolis joining in 1968. He was a board member of Community Health Network Foundation, Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home, American Red Cross, Visionary Enterprises Inc., Near North Development Corporation and Ivy Tech State College Foundation as well as President of Region 8 Ivy Tech College Board of Trustees and was the first person honored by being elected for an honorary degree by Ivy Tech State College.
Bill was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity; Life Member of Indiana and National Society of Professional Engineer being elected the Indiana Engineer of the Year in 1999; Life Member of American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers. He was also a member of the Order of the Knoll and Knights of St. Patrick, Iowa State University. Active in the state forestry circles, he was past president and past state secretary of Indiana Forestry Woodland Owners Association and was Indiana Outstanding Tree Farmer in 1978. He also served as a life member of the Indiana Forestry Education Foundation Board of Directors.
Bill was honored in 2010 as a Distinguished Hoosier by Gov. Mitchell Daniels.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Rita Birchard Sigman, and his brother James A. Sigman. He is survived by his son, Allan W. Sigman; daughters, Lynn K. (C. Richard) Bohr and Christine (Jason) Spangle; four grandchildren: Richard W. (Stephanie) Bohr, Carrie Bohr, Jack Sigman, and Charlotte Clayton; one great grandson, Charles T. Bohr.
