

MacDonnell, Alex Duncan Age 84, Mabou, died peacefully in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on January 14, 2014, after a lengthy illness. Born in Glengarry, Alex was the 11th child of John Andrew and Mary Cassie (Cameron) MacDonnell. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, Mabou. Alex was a hard rock miner and his work took him to many parts of Canada. He settled in Vancouver where they lived for many years. His love for Cape Breton took him back home in 1992 where he and Frances built their retirement home in Mabou. Their door was always open to family, friends and neighbours where a good cup of tea and a card game were waiting. Alex is survived by his wife, Mary Frances (MacDonald); son, Bill (Monica) and granddaughters, Karmyn and Kyra; brothers, Angus Anthony (Edriz), Rod (Rita), Lawrence (Charlotte); sisters, Rita (Jim), Colena, Annie, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, John A., Donald, Alexander, Malcolm, Jerome, Collie, John Francis; sisters, Margie, Cassie and Janet. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 17 in St. Mary’s Church Vestry, Mabou from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou with Fr. Angus Morris officiating, burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to Central Inverness Palliative Care Society or to St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Mabou.
