David Lawrence Egar

Born October 4th, 1947 to parents Ralph Laurence and Betty (Patterson) Egar, David grew up in Ottawa alongside his loving younger sister Cathy. He spent childhood summers and holidays with his cherished cousins from the Brockville area. After graduating with a Civil Engineering degree from Carleton University, David obtained a Masters in Engineering from the University of Ottawa and ultimately went to work for Environment Canada, finishing his career as the Director General for Air Pollution Control. Throughout his employment with the Federal Government, David prioritized time with family above all else, and on more than one occasion turned down opportunities for advancement in favour of more time at home.

David’s family provided him with endless joy and fulfillment. He married his true love and best friend Shelagh (Kelley) in 1979 and together they built a life characterized by mutual respect, loyalty and lots of laughter. They were a team together first and foremost. David’s unconditional love will always be treasured by his 3 children Susie (Jade), Danford (Lora) and Jeanne, who forever will be grateful for their father’s way of calmingly providing non-judgemental support and guidance and always championing their next pursuit. His grandson Lincoln was the light of his life - he loved him dearly and was so thankful for precious time together. He leaves behind nieces and nephews whom he also loved and with whom he shared many good memories.

Though a quiet person who enjoyed playing guitar, reading, learning, watching football (United!) and going for brisk walks in the outdoors, David forged connections with many valued friends who were like family as well. A few were long time email correspondents, who lasted through the years and brought him genuine gratification. The wonderful Margaree Harbour community held such a special place in his heart and have supported him and his family through both easy and challenging times. He was so fortunate to be at home here, surrounded by such love, generosity of spirit and friendship.

In the last 2 years David’s illness returned and he was cared for so compassionately and expertly by the ICMH community. He often reflected that he could feel the kindness as soon as he walked through the doors of the hospital. From the wonderful clerical team (including Clare, Willanna and Lindsay) who would greet him so warmly, to the phenomenal lab department who facilitated so much of his weekly care, to the pharmacy crew who offered such proficient service, to the paramedics and Emergency and Active Care nurses who intervened in some of his toughest moments – he was so appreciative of all your efforts. He was regularly cared for by the fabulous Ambulatory Care department (Denise, Aurelie, Alicia, Evie, Connie and April) who always go above and beyond to make their patients feel comfortable no matter the circumstances. Words alone cannot represent the truly magnificent Oncology Team (Meghan, Liz, Caitlin, Melissa, Melinda, Kelly, Scott, Sabrina and Dr. Kate MacInnes) – your commitment, dedication and extraordinary patient-advocacy was simply incomparable. He loved you all. Dr. Rhea MacDonald’s efficient and professional care was always so reassuring in uncertain times. In recent weeks he benefitted from the brilliant Palliative Care Team (Rachel, Moira, Paulette and Dr. Ritter) who gave him the ultimate gift of spending his last days at home, on his own terms, with his beloved Shelagh. He was deeply grateful for this.

There are many more people to thank and memories to share. A celebration of David’s life will occur at a later date when the weather is milder. Donations may be made in David’s memory to the ICMH Oncology Department, the ICMH Palliative Care Department or the Whale Cove Cemetery Fund. David was stoic and patient until the end of his life, and true to his character he slipped away quietly, leaving his family to cherish the immeasurable impact he had on us all, one that will echo indefinitely in our hearts.
