The passing of Evelyn Marius MacLean occurred peacefully at home on March 25, 2026. Mom left us as she lived her entire life, surrounded by the love of family. She was born on December 17, 1946 to the late Ben and Annie Belle (MacKinnon) Hawley. Evelyn was the devoted wife to Angus MacLean for fifty-eight years. Together they created a family they were exceptionally proud of and forever grateful for. Their love story was a journey to be admired and one of everlasting love. Mom’s proudest accomplishment was being a mother to six daughters and Grandma to eighteen grandchildren.
Evelyn lived a life of service. After twenty-two rewarding years with Home Care, she was considered one of the best by her colleagues. She made an impact on all who knew her with her positive attitude, strong work ethic, and selflessness. Evelyn was her grandkids’ biggest supporter, travelling the Maritimes with Angus watching every hockey game they could. She and Angus would often jump in the car on a whim and travel to visit family and friends all over North America. Her life exemplified her Catholic faith. Evelyn welcomed everyone into her home with her warm smile and generosity. She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, sister in-law and friend to many. Mom’s legacy will live on in her loved ones, as she has taught us to always remain humble and kind, and to “never forget your prayers.”
Evelyn is survived by daughters and son-in-laws Angela (Darrell) Roach (Cheticamp), Sylvia (Joe) MacPherson (Antigonish), Shelley (Clarke) Gillies and Stephanie (Michael) Trenholm, both of Port Hood, Amy (Chad) MacLellan and Evelena (Craig) Beaton both of Hammonds Plains. Evelyn leaves behind her beautiful grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart: Braeden, Breanna, Hawley, Reid, Tori, Brody, Brett, Hudson, Matthew, Liam, Sam, Anna, Kate, Isaac, Abigail, Ava, Carly and Paige. Left to mourn are brothers and sisters Bennie Hawley, Clara MacMillan, Douglas (Neallee) Hawley, Thelma Marie Glover, in-laws Sharon Hawley, Margie Hawley-MacDougall, Sadie (Edgar) Spears, Danny MacLean, Gary (Jessie) MacLean, Dennis (Darlene) MacLean and Bernie MacLean. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Annie Belle and Ben Hawley, siblings Johnena, Thelma, Joe, Angus and Donald Alex.
The family would like to thank Inverness County Home Support, the Palliative Care Team, Dr. Ritter and Lori Ann Gillis for their tremendous care and support throughout Mom’s journey. Special thanks to Nurse Practitioner Mary Anderson for her compassion and dedication to Mom’s care throughout her illness.
