

Beaton, Hugh John Age 62. It is with sad hearts we announce the passing of Hugh John Beaton of Mabou Coal Mines on Sunday, September 20th, 2015. He passed away peacefully in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Hugh John was born on October 10th, 1952 to Mary Anne (MacDonald) Beaton and the late Donald H. Beaton. He was a devout and active member of Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Mabou. Hugh was a loving and caring son, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was a quiet soul, with a great sense of humor. He always enjoyed a good cup of tea, a game of crib and “a coffee and smoke” from the Mabou Freshmart. In his younger years he was employed by the Nova Scotia Coast Guard as well as Halifax Metro Transit. Upon returning to Cape Breton he spent many years as a Lobster Fisherman. He leaves behind his loving son, Jared (Gillian); grandsons, Kinley Hugh and Elliott Stirling Donald, Cornwall P.E.I.; his mother, Mary Anne, Mabou Coal Mines; his sisters, Sarah Isabelle (Richard) MacDonald Judique; Annabelle (Brian) Eisener, Lake Echo; Linda (David) Leblanc, Cole Harbour; Diane (Alan) MacDonald, Cole Harbour; Karen Tonet, Porters Lake; Marilyn, Edmonton and brothers, Donald Alexander (Cathy), Northeast Mabou; Ronald Gerard (Darlene), Inverness; John Archie, Lake Echo; Finley (Brenda) Bateston; Wayne (Beverly), Edmonton; Leslie (Susan), Maccan; Sandy (Cathy), Mabou Coal Mines; Michael, Fort McMurray; Bernie (Bernadette), Mabou Coal Mines; as well as 31 nieces and nephews; seven grand nieces and nephews and many aunts and uncles. He is predeceased by his father, Donald H.; and brother, Francis.
Visitation will be held in the Vestry of St. Mary’s Church, Mabou on Wednesday, September 23 from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou with Fr. Angus Morris officiating, burial in the parish cemetery.
