It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Hugh Roderick "Gooxe" Rankin, much loved father, grandfather, brother and uncle who peacefully passed away on April 12, 2014, in the Dartmouth General Hospital at the age of 64 with his family at his side. Hugh was born in Inverness on November 8, 1949 to the late Mary Elizabeth (MacEachern) Rankin and Angus William Rankin. In his earlier life, Hugh worked as a fisherman with his uncle, John Dan Rankin and also as a labourer. Hugh was a kind man with a big heart. He was a friend, was loved by many and will be missed by all. He was a man of strong faith and a member of the Stella Maris Parish in Inverness.
Hugh was an avid sports fan who loved all sports. He would be found at the Inverness racetrack most Sundays and Wednesdays, awaiting a day of harness racing while carefully analyzing the program with his buddies on the hope of catching a long shot. Hugh loved watching baseball and of course his favorite team The San Francisco Giants. Over the years he was know to have bragging rights about viewing five no hitters. Football and the New York Giants was another love for Hugh. His all time favorite winter sport was hockey and wouldn't think of missing a Chicago Black Hawks game, his long time team. When Spring arrived, Hugh would be found at the local brooks for trout fishing.
He lived his last two years at the Inverary Manor, where the staff were very caring and many went above and beyond their call of duty to make Hugh feel comfortable and at home. Hugh is survived by his loving daughter, Denise (Daniel) and the pride of his life, his only grandson, James Hugh; his sisters, Mary (Michael) Nutt Wolfville; Ann Inverness; Betty Toronto; Frances (Allan) Port Hood; aunts, Helen Dwyer, New Waterford; Betty Graham, Judique;
nieces, Jenny (Gary) Sisson, Dartmouth; Tegan (Robert) Carlisle, Toronto; nephews, Lanny (Lisa) Hanscombe, Inverness; Donnie (Jeanette) Rankin, Dominican Republic; Bradley MacDonald, Port Hood. Visitation will be in Inverness Funeral home from 12 noon - 1:45 p.m. with funeral following at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in Stella Maris Church, Inverness with Fr. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Inverary Manor, Inverness or to Stella Maris Parish Cemetery Fund, Inverness. On-line condolences may be made to: www.invernessfuneralhome.com.
