It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Martin Gillis on September 15th, 2024, at the age of 91 years.
Jimmy was born on April 29th, 1933, in Margaree, Cape Breton, to his parents, Hugh Gillis and Sara (MacFarlane). He was the youngest of 8 and was predeceased by Joan, Isabelle Dougal, Patrick, Alexander, Christine, and Katherine. He was the loving husband of Margaret (Peggy Mackinnon) and a wonderful father to his three children, Catherine (Paul Cashmore), Jeffrey (Cheryl Matson) and Dan Gillis (single not picky).
As a dad, he was always there, providing guidance, support and love and laughter. An amazing grandfather to his 5 grandchildren, Finn Joyce, Cole Cashmore, Maggie Cashmore, Zach Gillis, and James Gillis. Jimmy was a proud uncle and loved his nieces and nephews.
At a young age, Jimmy joined the merchant marines, he then was a miner in northern Ontario, he then entered the elevator trade where he worked for over 30 years. In retirement, Jim returned to Cape Beton, where he enjoyed golf, renovating his house and spending time with family and friends.
Jimmy had a mischievous sense of humor, loved sharing funny stories with his friends and family and had a song or a limerick for every occasion. He was proud Cape Bretoner, he loved the culture, music, and the people. He will be missed by all that had the opportunity to know him.
Visitation will be held in Inverness Funeral Home on Thursday September 19, 2024 from 3-6 pm. Funeral Mass to take place on Friday in St. Joseph's Church, South West Margaree at 3:00 pm. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
