John is survived by his wife, Aurea (Romard) Margaree Forks. He was the proud father of Mark (Ramona) Gillis, Fort Simpson, NT, Deidre, Margaree Forks, Christopher (Geneliza) Gillis, Guelph ON, Shawn (Deb), Fort Simpson, NT; proud grampie to Rylan (Jerri), Ariel and Colton of Fort Simpson NT, Ian and Gordon of Guelph, ON, and John of Fort Simpson NT; great-grandchildren, Mia, Holden, Mack, Bryton all of Fort Simpson NT.
John was predeceased by his parents, Jerome and Jessie (MacEachern) Gillis; siblings, Mary (Donald R) Gillis, Murial (Tony decd) Gillis, Cecelia (Joe) MacEachen, Bernie Gillis, Robert (Diane) Gillis, Marjorie (Donald decd) Gillis, Danny (Kelly) Gillis, Sandy Gillis, Gordon (Will) Gillis, Catherine Gillis, Stephen (Deana) Gillis.
John was a member of St. Michael's Church, Margaree. John (SPUD) was retired from Port Hawkesbury Paper. He was involved in many community activities. Margaree Fire Dept., Grand Knight with KOC Council # 9936 serving as chair. Participant of Tai Chi and upon his retirement, took a special interest in furthering his Gaelic Language.
He was an avid walker- often accompanied by his dog Leo. His world revolved around his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John always had time for people - always willing to share a story, sometimes with mischief and usually some tidbit of advice. He was always willing to volunteer for church and community. His latest being a driver for Meals on Wheels. Arrangements entrusted to the Inverness Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in the East Margaree Hall, Margaree. Funeral Mass on Friday January 17, 2025, at 11:00 am in St. Michael's Church, Margaree. Father Peter LeBlanc officiating.
