At approximately 2:15 pm on Tuesday in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Donald S. MacDonald (affectionately known as Donald Willie) departed from this world to join his parents Willie and Marie (MacIsaac) MacDonald and his older sister Rita MacDonnell. Donald’s battle with cancer was not a winning one despite the tremendous care given by the medical staff and the palliative care unit in Inverness. His suffering is over.
Donald was born on Thursday, January 12, 1939, in Inverness. He lived almost all of his 78 years on Company Road in Port Hood. He worked for numerous employers but mostly for the Department of Highways and in the fishing industry until ill health forced an early retirement. His love of card playing (cribbage, 63, and auction), watching the horse races, and listening to good music kept him competitive and entertained. Most recently he would be found at the jam sessions on Friday night at the Little White Church Hall (St. Stephen’s). From these events, he will be thoroughly missed. At home, the Blue Jays, the Dodgers, the Packers, and especially the Leafs kept him totally connected to the sports world. He longed for the day his beloved Leafs would once again hoist Lord Stanley’s trophy.
Donald will leave behind heavy hearts that include his daughter, Valerie Bowen, and his beautiful grand-children Lauren, Brody, and Avery who now reside in Beaumont, Alberta. He is survived by his sisters Frances MacDonnell and Rosie Beaton, Mabou; Georgina MacNeil and Carmelita Gillis, Port Hood; Bernadette Montague, Dundas, Ontario; Anne Beaton, Windsor, Ontario; and Mary (Donnie) MacEachern, Hamilton, Ontario; also brothers Howard (Yvonne), Gerald (Judy), Cecil (Mary Janet) and Lloyd (Helen) all of Port Hood, along with brother-in-law Roddie MacDonnell of Niagara Falls, Ontario, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his parents Willie & Marie; sister Rita; brothers-in-law Alex Duncan MacDonnell, Jerry Montague, John Francis Beaton, John Angus Gillis, Sandy Beaton, and Alex Dan MacNeil.
Donald was a faithful Catholic and his death will leave a huge space in the back pew of St. Peter’s Church. He will return once again to his church, this time to the front where his funeral will be celebrated by Father Vincent van Zutphen on Monday, April 3, at 11:00 am. Visitation will take place in Port Hood Resting Place on Saturday, from 6-8 pm, and on Sunday, from 3-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Inverness Palliative Care Society or to Port Hood Resting Place.
