Thurlow was a son of the late Perley Watts Smith and Mary Margaret (MacIntosh) Smith (Port Hood). He is survived by his sister, Marie Nicholson of Middle River; brother-in-law, Norman Smith of St. Catharines; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Beaton d.2008); sister, Shirley Smith; brother, Jimmie Smith; sister-in-law, Cecilia Smith and brother-in-law, Donald Nicholson.
Thurlow attended Port Hood Academy and Acadia University. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force 1943-1946 and was a veteran of the Second World War. He graduated from the Provincial Land Surveyors School and worked for the Department of Highways until his retirement.
The family thanks the staff of Inverary Manor for their compassionate care over the last four years. Cremation has taken place. Per Thurlow’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A graveside service for family and friends of Thurlow's will be held on Saturday, October 16th at 3:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Mabou, with Pastor Maggie Plant celebrating. All Covid 19 guidelines will be followed.
