A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Columbia, South Carolina. A reception will follow at Neglia Hall. A private burial will take place at a later date. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, is assisting the family.
Betty was always known as someone you could go to for comfort, a good joke (sometimes not so appropriate), or a great meal. She was never happier than when she was taking care of someone. Her beloved James was the heart of her life until he passed in 1997.
She began working for her son, David, at the young age of 68. She worked for the next 23 years as the heart and soul of Gibson & Associates. She never met a stranger, and you could always count on her to handle the most upset clients. She would have them laughing with her within the first five minutes on the phone.
Betty would do anything for anyone as long as it was in her power. She loved spending time with her family, whether she was cooking for everyone or later in life when she was just there spending time with those she loved.
She is survived by her sister, Pete McCartha; daughter-in-law, Connie Gibson (David); grandsons, David Gibson IV (Casey), Michael Gibson (Elizabeth), Steven Brewer Jr. (Emily), Christopher Brewer, and James Brewer; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James; son, James David Gibson III; daughter, Cynthia Brewer; brother, John Geer; and sister, Nancy Geer.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers at both Wellmore of Lexington and Harbison Shores. They would also like to thank the teams at All Seasons Hospice and MSA Hospice for their wonderful care and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
