

COLUMBIA - A graveside service for Christopher “Chris” Robert Chason, 51, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2020 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In honor of Chris, camo dress is preferred.
Chris passed away Monday, December 14, 2020 after his one year battle with colorectal cancer surrounded by his family. Born on September 10, 1969 in Panama City, Fla., he was a son of James Frederick Chason of Chapin and the late Janet Hornberger Gobbel. Though residing in Kinston, NC, he grew up in Columbia and graduated from Cardinal Newman High School in 1987. Chris attended Presbyterian College and Winthrop College. He served for 4 years in the U.S. Navy from 1991-1995 and was stationed in Millington Naval Air Station. Chris’ experience in aviation technology started his career after leaving the Navy. At the time of his passing, he was employed as an Aviation Technician Specialist at Spirit Aero Systems in Kinston, NC working on fuselage for Boeing, Airbus, and Osprey. Chris was an avid outdoorsman who had a love for the outdoors including hunting, fishing, and camping. He placed a deer in the State Record Book in 2011.
Surviving are his daughter, Sydney A. Chason of Irmo, SC; father, J. Frederick Chason and his wife, Peggy Powell-Chason; stepfather, J. Bruce Gobbel of Hayesville, NC; fiancé, Melissa Thomas of Kinston, NC; sisters, Mieka C. Hughes (Joe) of Woodstock, Ga. and Luann Powell Edens (Jay) of Bluffton, SC; brothers, Chad Powell (Liz) of Columbia, SC and Matt Powell (Lauren) of Chapin, SC; and seven nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Janet Hornberger Gobbel.
