Clinton Roger Hinson, known to all as Roger, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, service, and dedication to family and community. He was born on December 2, 1946, at Columbia Hospital and spent his formative years in Columbia, South Carolina–a city he would call home throughout his life.
Roger was a proud graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1965, where he was an active member of the Debate Team and earned the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout. He went on to attend Clemson University, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. As a young boy, Roger would often pretend he was a radio disc jockey–a dream he fulfilled while in college by working in many capacities for WSBF, Clemson’s on-campus student radio station. A devoted Clemson Tiger through and through, Roger was a lifelong fan who rarely missed a game–first from the stands and later from the comfort of his home.
Roger began his professional journey by programming computers for the South Carolina Highway Department before coming back to his calling in the world of radio. He thrived in radio advertising sales at WIS and WSCQ in Columbia, where he worked for 23 years and consistently excelled as a top producer. In 1992, he transitioned into a second career in real estate, joining Russell & Jeffcoat and later Coldwell Banker. Once again, Roger’s natural charisma, integrity, and work ethic earned him numerous accolades and the respect of clients and colleagues alike over his 24-year career in real estate.
A man of Christian faith and service, Roger was raised in, and was a long-time member of, Park Street Baptist Church and in later years became an active member of St. Andrews Baptist Church. Throughout his life, he was a faithful and devoted follower of Christ, and served for many years as a Deacon at both churches. For nearly five decades, he also devoted his time and heart to the St. Andrews Optimist Club. He served as Club President, three-time District Public Relations Chairman, and eight-time District Oratorical Contest Chairman. He frequently emceed the Club’s annual banquet and was a constant presence at community events and fundraisers—from Christmas tree sales to golf tournaments—always championing local youth and celebrating the accomplishments of students.
Despite his numerous professional and community-service accolades, Roger cherished time with his family more than anything, especially the many joyful vacations to Surfside Beach with his wife, children, and grandchildren; cheering at dance recitals and ball games; and relaxing on Lake Murray aboard his beloved pontoon boat—his “man toy.” His sense of humor, kind spirit, and warm smile touched everyone he met, and his absence will be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of loving him.
Roger is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Dianne; his children, Sandra Marcengill (m: Cliff Marcengill, deceased) and Ken Hinson (m: Erin Hinson); his beloved grandchildren, Jack and Maggie; and his nieces and nephews, Jill Webster (m: Ted Webster), Jay Lawrimore (m: Aileen Lawrimore), Erik Hinson (deceased), Mark Hinson (m: Kristen Hinson), and Greg Hinson (m: Betsy Hinson), all of whom were the light of his life. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Myrtle Hinson, and his siblings, Ernest Hinson, Jr. (m: Evelyn Hinson) and Joyce Lawrimore (m: JB Lawrimore). He will be greatly missed and forever remembered for his unwavering love, generous heart, and the countless lives he impacted through his work and service.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held at St. Andrews Baptist Church on Saturday, May 10, 2025, beginning at 2:00 pm, with visitation beginning at 1:00 pm in the church atrium. A graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Park will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Leeza’s Care Connection’s Silver Lining Club (https://leezasdare2care.wixsite.com/silverliningclub), the Good Samaritan Sunday School Class at St. Andrews Baptist Church (https://www.mysabc.org), or the St. Andrews Optimist Club (https://optimistclubofstandrews.org/).
