
COLUMBIA A graveside service for Daniel Albert Groover will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2020 in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, with The Very Reverend Canon Gary S. Linsky, V.F. Rector officiating. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mr. Groover passed Saturday, December 19, 2020, in Columbia from complications from colon cancer. Born on February 7, 1931 in Jacksonville Fla., he was a son of the late Daniel Abner and Irene Bradford Groover.
He was a loving and caring husband to his wife, Judy, and was the love of her life. He always put her first and called her precious.
Dan graduated from Landon High School in Jacksonville and also graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville for a year and a half.
Dan served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War. He loved his country and his flag. He worked as a Nabisco salesman for many years and later the American Greeting Card Company as a representative. He advanced to work later for Gibson Greeting Card Company and retired with them.
He was an avid reader of mystery, war, and history books. He enjoyed traveling to small towns in the Columbia area and the mountains of North Carolina. He enjoyed television, especially musicals, westerns, history and war and nature programs. He never missed the Christmas movie “The Christmas Carol.” Dan was a Presbyterian but attended the Basilica of St. Peter with his wife and they were married there in 2016.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Judith Anne Brodkorb Tschorn Groover, previously from Gainesville, Fla. and currently residing in Columbia; his daughters, Melody Ann Groover of Jacksonville, Claudia Groover of Gainesville; his son, David Lee Groover of Jacksonville; his brother, James Groover (Shirley) of Broken Arrow, Okla.; his stepdaughters, Debbie Tschorn Coutant (Jerry) of Columbia, Cindy Tschorn Stokes (Lewis) of Gainesville; granddaughter, Jessica (Denny); grandsons, Jacobs (Amanda), Jeffrey (Allison), David Lee Groover Jr.; great-grandson, Dalton; great-granddaughters, Brooke, Ella Mae, Emerie, Elizabeth, Emelia Grace, all of Jacksonville; many nieces and nephews; a special cousin, Linda Jones McMullen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; many friends of Jacksonville, especially Roger and Eunice Johnson; and many new friends in Columbia. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Rosemarie Legh Groover; an infant son, Daniel Albert Groover Jr.; his sister, Ann Groover Hines; brother, Charles Groover; an aunt, Annette Bradford Jones.
He will be missed by so many people. He loved to tell jokes and had a wonderful sense of humor. He had a kind and loving heart. The Lord has him now and all his suffering is gone.
Many thanks to Lexington Medical Center Extended Care Nursing Home for their excellent care, especially Paula, LaRea, Andrea, Danielle and many others. In addition, many thanks to the social workers and nurses and others for their loving help and care at Compassionate Care Hospice.
