

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, November 6, 1943, he was the son of the late Worth Hardin and Mildred Alice Campbell. He was a 1961 graduate of Messick High School in Memphis and received his B.A. degree in English at the University of Mississippi in 1965 and M.A. in Sociology from Appalachian State University in 1973. He served as an Airborne Ranger Infantry officer for 20 years, including two tours in Vietnam as platoon leader, Recondo Force Leader, and company commander with the 2d Battalion, 502d Airborne, lst Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. He was a graduate of the Infantry Officer’s Advanced Course and the Command and General Staff College, and was awarded two Distinguished Service Medals, four Bronze Star Medals, two Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry, an Army Commendation Medal with “V” device, and the Purple Heart. He is a recipient of the Combat Infantryman's Badge. His last tour of duty was at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he served as battalion commander and acting Brigade Commander.
Upon retirement from military service, he served six years as a self-employed financial representative with USPA & IRA based in Columbia. He joined state government in 1992 and served as the Oconee Nuclear Plant Offsite Planner with the South Carolina Emergency Preparedness Division, then moved to Director of Disaster Response Services in the Department of Social Services, where he retired in 2003. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Tau Omega, Alpha Phi Omega, The American Legion, the US Army Ranger Association, and a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 52 years, Patricia W. Campbell of Irmo, daughter and son-in-law, Keely and David McMahan, also of Irmo, and granddaughter Emily McMahan.
