

Dr. Underhill graduated with honors from Episcopal High School, Yale University as the top chemical engineering student, the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society, Harvard University, Doctor of Science.
He served in the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Center and served as a fellow on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. His research in nuclear energy and air pathogens remains of importance here and abroad. He was the Henry Savage endowed chair at USC Public Health before retiring. He had also been the laboratory director for forty years for a scientific company in Raleigh, N.C.
Dr. Underhill is survived by his dearly loved wife, Marilyn Stein (Giering) Underhill, and a son, Eric Underhill. He is also survived by siblings, Barbara Underhill, Dr. Charles Underhill, Roy Underhill, and Dr. Thomas Underhill, and four nieces.
Most of their retirement years were spent at their Highlands, N.C. cottage and winters on Saint Simons Island, Georgia. He and his wife had recently moved to a cottage at Laurel Crest, a Presbyterian retirement center in West Columbia, S.C.
He will be greatly missed by many, especially his wife, Marilyn of 32 years, and his most loving and loyal Australian Shepherd “Frankie James”.
Dwight is now in heaven with the Lord he loved and served.
