

After graduating from Prep School, Sanborn Seminary, Kingston, New Hampshire, he attended Elon University in Burlington, N.C. where he majored in history. After graduating from college, he played baseball with the Boston Red Sox, 2nd base, until he was called to serve in the Korean War. He was in the 101st Airborne.
Fred’s career was in the insurance industry. He moved to Columbia, S.C. in 1968 as Marketing Manager for Aetna Insurance.
His hobbies were sports, reading history and sports books and camping. He and his wife had traveled all but two states in the U.S., including Alaska and through Canada. He loved people and could talk to everyone. He entertained his grandchildren with stories and facial motions.
He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Shirley Quattlebaum Grant; four children, Eddie Sturgeon of Chapin, Lisa Santangelo (Isadore) of Savannah, Randy Grant (Karen) of Melbourne, Fla., Neil Cestra (Eileen) of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Louise Quattlebaum. In addition to Fred’s parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, and one grandson, Stanford Smith.
Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, with burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.
