

COLUMBIA - Dr. Leonard “Len” Franklin Maiden passed away on March 10, 2016 at Lexington Medical Center after a brief illness. Len was born on June 13, 1928 in Weyers Cave, Virginia, a son of Avis J. and Lillie H. Maiden. He was a graduate of Warren County High School in Front Royal, Virginia and received degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Virginia, and the University of South Carolina. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Len, Mary Lee, and their children moved to South Carolina in 1965 when he joined the University of South Carolina faculty where he retired Professor Emeritus of the College of Education. Len is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Lee; two children, Chip (Sue) of Great Falls and Paige Smoak (Brad) of Irmo; eight grandchildren, Brian (April) Maiden, Graham Maiden, Hayley Smoak, Ross Maiden, Hope Maiden, Lenlee Smoak, Cole Smoak, and Reece Smoak; and three great-grandchildren, Davis Maiden, Caroline Maiden, and Emory Maiden. He is survived by one brother, Stretch of Coronado, CA; and predeceased by three siblings, Earnest, Cecile Smith, Warren, and Lawrence. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo.
