
Marylee was born on January 10, 1931 in Crozet, Virginia, the daughter of Mary Grant and Marvin Humphreys.
Marylee and Leonard and their children moved to South Carolina in 1966 so Leonard could pursue a PhD at the University of South Carolina where they remained for their lives. Marylee’s career began as secretary of Irmo Elementary School. She then went on to work for the South Carolina State Budget and Control Board and the South Carolina Educator Improvement Task Force. She retired from the South Carolina State Fire Marshall’s Office where she designed and created the Freddy the Fire Cat curriculum for elementary schools in South Carolina.
Her family remembers her as a beloved wife, caregiver, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt. Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all of their friends remember her as their wonderful “Mamaw”. She was a great cook with many special recipes including her famous ham biscuits. She was also an accomplished artist, gardener, avid reader, animal lover, Hallmark movie enthusiast and keeper of many family traditions.
Marylee is survived by two children Chip Maiden (Sue) of Lancaster, SC and Paige Smoak (Brad) of Irmo, SC, eight grandchildren Brian Maiden (April), Graham Maiden (Brooke), Hayley Jackson (Daniel), Ross Maiden, Hope Maiden, Lenlee Smoak, Cole Smoak, and Reece Smoak. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren, Davis, Caroline, Emory, Gray, Vivian, Luke, and Rayne and her special niece and nephews Avie (Tim), Jeff (Kim), and Mike.
She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Leonard Maiden and her sister, Laura Humphries Davis.
Her family will celebrate a life-well-lived with a private gathering.
