Myrtle “Myrt” May Bernabo, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at the age of 91. Born in Liberty, NY and raised in Cornwall, NY, Myrt lived a life full of laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends.
She was the daughter of Leonard Vincent Gorton and Mabel Marie Kimmes Gorton, lovingly known as “Shirley.” Myrt is preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul J. Bernabo, and her sisters Marie Woods and Gladys Shearer (Bob). She is survived by her sister Georgina Lark (Bill).
Myrt was the cherished mother of Donna M. Keyrouse, Frank H. Decker III (Janice), and Alan M. Decker. She leaves behind a legacy through her many grandchildren: Joe Keyrouse (Connie), Jessica Preisig (Thomas), Heather Tapler (Steven), Kevin Keyrouse (Suzanne), Jennifer Fisher (John), Kelly Keyrouse (Dave), Samantha Decker (Andy), Frank Decker IV (Micah), Brittany Staples, and 23 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews who adored her.
Myrt retired from the State of New York and found joy in a life rich with family and friendships. She and her husband were longtime members of the Nyack Field Club, where they played tennis and paddle with friends and spent cherished moments swimming with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They spent many winters in St. Augustine, Florida, enjoying the sunshine and each other’s company. A talented artist and seamstress, Myrt loved to paint.
Myrt especially loved traveling with her bowling league to places across the country. She was a vibrant soul — a wonderful mom and grandma, a dear friend to all who knew her, known for her quick wit and great sense of humor. Though her absence leaves a deep void, those who loved her find comfort knowing she is now reunited with her beloved Paul. Surely, they are dancing together once again.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Dunbar Funeral Home – Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC 29063. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held in New York at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Myrt’s memory by spending time with loved ones and sharing a laugh — just as she would have wanted.
