

Went to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; her daughter, Janie; and her four sisters. She died peacefully at Standford Lodge, surrounded by her family. Originally from Tompkins Center; born on October 21, 1922, Aldine was the third daughter of Aldis and Nettie Trefry and was very close with her sisters: Phyllis Smith, Beaulah Todd, Marion Dennis, and Annette Collier. Aldine and Dick (Crazy Jack) Phelps wed on February 16, 1946 and they enjoyed 38 years of marriage. Aldine and Dick created a life together in Jackson, Michigan, had three children: Lynn (Kathy) of Greeley, CO, Janie of Jackson (1949-2006) and AnJie (Mike) of Schoolcraft. Aldine is the grandmother to Robin & Michael Semm, Shawn and Dolores Havens, Kyle and Tanya Hartley, BriAnne and Kyle McKee, and Keith Havens; the great-grandmother to Anthony and Nicholas Semm, Patrick and James Havens, Madalyn and Haidyn Hartley; and the great-great grandmother to MaryAnne Penny Havens. She was also the “Michigan Grams” to Lynn and Kathy’s family members who reside in CO, WA, and TX. Aldine graduated from Jackson High School in 1940 and worked for 18 years at ITT Hancock, where she retired in 1982. Aldine had a keen love for classical and opera music and was a steadfast supporter of NPR and PBS. Aldine belonged to an all-female singing group, the Sweet Adelines and traveled throughout the U.S. with the Jackson Trippers. Passionate about literacy, Aldine spent her time volunteering at Allen School. A member of Northeast Missionary Church, Aldine created and managed the church library, sharing her love of reading and her abiding faith in Jesus with all who entered. To know Aldine was to love her; she was an extraordinarily generous woman who will be deeply missed. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 22nd 2018 at 12:00 P.M. at Northeast Missionary Church at (903 Virginia Street, Jackson) with Pastor Darren Pettifor officiating. Visitation at the church, Monday at 11:00 A.M. until service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Aldine’s memory to Northeast Missionary Church, Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church (Schoolcraft) or your local Meals on Wheels program.
